.before backyard
The experience and design of the rear of the home was a gift of the process in many ways as the existing topography remained untouched. The singular fascia line interacts at eye level when walking from the front to the back then raises 20 feet above when you ultimately land in the rear yard. This relationship between the roof line and the ground forces the user to be acutely aware of the change in topography.
The existing fireplace in the lower-level den was originally planned to remain. During demolition, it was revealed that the existing chimney was not suitable for reuse and re-building was not financially reasonable. With the help of pure client collaboration, we decided to remove the fireplace all together and take the opportunity to add a patio at the primary suite and sliding doors to the backyard at the upper and lower levels, connecting interior to exterior more seamlessly. The decision also yielded the design and construction of the stair connecting the upper and lower-level patio space. The use of 2” steel flat bar affixed perpendicular to the stringer creates a dynamic and lacey effect as the user interacts with them.
